WASPI 10 Minute Rule Bill - 8/2/24

LAST WEEK (Wednesday 7th February 2024) Alan Brown MP’s 10 minute Rule Bill on behalf of the WASPI campaign passed its First Reading.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun took a prominent stance on the issue of state pension age changes affecting women born between 6th April 1950 and 5th April 1960.

Mr Brown’s 10 Minute Rule Bill passed with no objections and its Second Reading is set to go to the floor on Friday 19th April 2024.

Alan Brown MP’s Bill urges the UK Government to publish compensation scheme proposals for the women affected by the state pension age changes.

More than 6,500 women in Kilmarnock and Loudoun have been affected by these changes and Mr Brown has worked alongside the WASPI Campaign since he was elected in 2015.

The MP reached out to women in Kilmarnock and Loudoun who have been affected by this and raised some of their cases during the reading of the Bill.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

“I was pleased to see my 10 Minute Rule Bill pass its First Reading with no objections.

“This is an issue that affects more than 6,500 in Kilmarnock and Loudoun as well as nearly four million across the entire UK.

“My office has been dealing with so many WASPI women and the level of engagement from them ahead of the Bill was remarkable.

“So many got in touch to give their personal account of what they have been through and I raised some of them within my speech – it was impossible to go through them all given the number of emails we had.

“Their stories are heartbreaking and I did my best to raise their voices in Parliament and demand justice is served.

“All three UK-wide parties have been complicit in one scandal or another. Be it the Miners’ Strike miscarriage of justice; Hillsborough; infected blood inquiry; postmaster (Horizon) scandal and WASPI. It should not take a TV drama to force the UK Government to act and deliver justice.

“It has been bitterly disappointing to see the lack of action from the Labour benches, who are supposed to be the main opposition in Parliament – their silence has been deafening.

“I look forward to the Second Reading of the Bill, set to take place in April, and will continue to update constituents on the progress of this.”

WASPI 10 Minute Rule Bill - 1/2/24

This week (Wednesday 7th February 2024), Alan Brown MP will present a 10-Minute Rule Bill to the House on behalf of the WASPI Women.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun is set to take a prominent stance on the issue of state pension age changes affecting women born between 6th April 1950 and 5th April 1960.

The Bill urges the Secretary of State for the Department of Work & Pensions to publish compensation scheme proposals for the affected women.

More than 6,500 women in Kilmarnock and Loudoun are affected by these changes to the state pension age.

Mr Brown has been at the forefront of this cause since his election in 2015, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the concerns of the WASPI Women.

Commenting, the representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“This bill marks a crucial step in addressing the ongoing injustice faced by these women, seeking to rectify the adverse effects of state pension age adjustments.

"This is a cruel and grave injustice that has gone unaddressed for far too long. More than 6,500 women in Kilmarnock and Loudoun are facing the unfair consequences of state pension age changes, impacting their financial stability and overall well-being.

“This is not just a statistical figure but represents real lives, real struggles, and real injustices.

"I've been working alongside these women since my election in 2015, consistently advocating for their cause and seeking fairness in light of the challenges they face. My office continues to handle dozens of cases, reflecting the ongoing commitment to addressing the issues at hand.

“This 10-Minute Rule Bill is another step in our relentless pursuit to right this wrong and ensure a more equitable future for the WASPI Women.

“It is imperative that Westminster rectifies this situation promptly.”

Small Business Saturday - 1/12/23

On Friday (1st December 2023), Alan Brown MP demonstrated his commitment to supporting local businesses by visiting enterprises in preparation for Small Business Saturday (2nd December 2023).

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun chose to focus on businesses on the town’s Hurlford Road (Riccarton), providing a firsthand look at their operations.

Small Business Saturday is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign designed to highlight the success of small enterprises and encourage consumers to embrace local shopping, thereby supporting small businesses within their communities.

During his visits, the MP specifically highlighted the recently opened business space at the former Ritchie Ltd premises, which now houses several new and small businesses from the town. This strategic choice aimed to draw attention to the dynamic and diverse entrepreneurial landscape thriving within the town.

In preparation for the main event on Small Business Saturday, the MP took the time to visit a variety of establishments within this business hub, including; Sorted.iT, Hair By Amy C and Annandale Home Improvements.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

“Small Business Saturday gives us the chance to celebrate the top-class local enterprise we have on our doorstep.

“As MP, I do my best to engage in supporting and championing our local businesses. The recently established space on Hurlford Road was an ideal spot to focus on, given its freshness and diverse range of enterprises.

“I attended an electronic repair technician (Sorted.IT), a hair stylist (Hair By Amy C) as well as a home improvements and double glazing specialist – this personifies the range and different types of businesses I visited.

"Listening to the startup stories from local businesses is always truly fascinating. I hold nothing but admiration for those who take the plunge and venture out on their own. Seeing these businesses thrive is absolutely fantastic and I am confident they will only continue to progress.

“With the build-up to Christmas well and truly upon us, now is the perfect time to go out and support small businesses within our constituency and give the local economy a boost.

"It is important to celebrate small businesses and the integral part they play in our community – they are about far more than profit. They provide much-needed services and goods; they offer employment and training; they boost the local economy, and they have a major role in rebuilding our town centres.

“I want to give a massive thanks to Liam (Sorted. IT), Amy (Hair By Amy C), and Garry (Annandale) for taking the time out of their extremely busy schedule to chat with me. I look forward to seeing their businesses prosper further in the future.”

Press Release: SafeWalk - 30/11/23

ALAN BROWN MP SUPPORTS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

In support of the UN Women worldwide campaign to end gender-based violence Alan Brown MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun attended a Parliamentary reception to show support for this important cause.

The event, organised in collaboration with SafeWalk, aligned with this year’s theme to ‘invest to prevent violence against women and girls’.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign encourages citizens to show their commitment to ending violence against women and girls by sharing the actions they are taking to create a world free from such violence.

SafeWalk are a groundbreaking new initiative from SafeKab, dedicated to ensuring the safety of women when travelling. Representatives from SafeWalk were present at the event, to give insight into how their app works, and how it can help constituents across Kilmarnock and Loudoun.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

"I was pleased to show my support for this incredibly vital campaign.

“I regularly hear from women across my constituency about their concerns and experiences when travelling, and I know how much of an impact it can have on their daily lives.

“Women should be able to travel safely; however, that still isn’t the case for so many, and that’s why initiatives such as the 16 days of activism and apps like SafeWalk are so important to moving this cause forward.

“It is crucial to recognise that our efforts at the local level contribute to a larger, worldwide campaign against violence targeting women.

“It is high time for us to stand against this pervasive issue, and strive to create a world where women can travel without fear, ensuring safety, dignity, and equality for all."

Gavin Johnston from SafeWalk added:

“Our first priority with anything we do is safety. That’s our number one goal.

“The idea for Safewalk came from exactly that. We wanted to make sure everyone feels safe when making a journey.

“Over the years, you see things you don’t want to and that no one should have to experience. We hope to eradicate that as far as possible.

“It’s a real concern for women, and that’s why we want to address these issues, and hopefully give women confidence when travelling”.

Press Release: Barony Campus (East Ayrshire School Meals) - 24/11/2

Last Week (Friday 17th November 2023) Alan Brown MP visited the Barony Campus in Cumnock.

The MP was shown around the super school by Food Services Manager Chris Walker and Senior Catering Manager Kim Sloan, before serving up some fish and chips for the P1 class.

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun was invited to see first-hand how East Ayrshire’s Council Catering Department operate and hear about the local authority’s fantastic half-price school meal initiative.

Since August 2023 the Council has been supporting a half-price school meal option for all paying pupils within Primary 6 and 7 and all academy pupils. This means all paying children receive a healthy meal at lunchtime for £1.08.

East Ayrshire Council Catering Department serve over 1,100 freshly prepared meals to pupils and young learners daily at the Campus. All meals are served with a selection of fresh vegetables or salad options and use a host of local suppliers for the ingredients - including Corrie Mains eggs, Fergusons bakery, Peroni fish Merchants, Spittal Fruit and Vegetables, Mossgiel Farm and Campbells Brothers Prime meat.

Mr Brown was also briefed on Mossgiel Farm supplying fresh milk to all school kitchens which are distributed into milk machines for pupils to help themselves. This has resulted in reduced the use of single-use plastic bottles by 100% an estimated 15 million single-use cartons not being used.

Commenting, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“The local authority deserves so much credit for the food that is on offer for every pupil at every school in East Ayrshire.

“The accessibility of a high-quality, freshly prepared meal for paying pupils at a mere £1.08 is truly commendable, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis.

“The commitment to ensuring no child goes home hungry is not only laudable but also imperative.

“It was great to hear the Council’s use of several local suppliers for their production, and everything is made fresh in-house. The employment factor was also interesting, given the fact that East Ayrshire currently has five modern apprentices working in school kitchens across the area.

“I was glad to lend a hand and dish up some lunches for the kids before being treated to my own fish and chips which was delicious.

“I would like to thank Chris and Kim for generously taking time out of their busy schedules to provide me with a comprehensive tour and discuss their operational strategies. The exceptional rapport they share with the staff truly personifies the cohesiveness of an outstanding team and the exceptional working environment they have in place there."

Also commenting, Food Services Manager Chris Walker said:

“It was a pleasure as the Food Services Manager within East Ayrshire Council to invite along Alan Brown to our Barony Campus to view first-hand the school meals service.

“Alan saw first-hand the healthy and nutritious meals that are served to over 1000 pupils each day in our Early Childhood Centre, Primary and Secondary Schools within the Campus.

“Alan showed a great interest in the preparation and delivery of the school meals service on the day of his visit even helping out with the service at the counters serving Primary school pupils their healthy lunch on the day along with a fresh cup of Mossgiel milk.”

"Nominating Sarah for the MP HERoes Awards was a no-brainer. Her captivating journey epitomises the essence of these awards.

Press Release: UK Parliament Week 2023

Last week (6th November 2023) Alan Brown MP visited local schools and community groups as part of UK Parliament Week 2023.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun engaged with the future leaders of tomorrow, visiting Auchinleck Primary, Loudoun Academy - his former school, and the 17th Brownie & 6th Guides at Kay Park Parish Church Hall.

UK Parliament Week ran from Monday 6th – 12th November 2023. Its aim is to highlight the work of Parliament and how anyone can get involved - last year over 1.1 million people took part in the event from all across the UK and further afield.

In advance of the visits, Mr Brown's office staff prepared kits and packs, filled with engaging materials for the young people. The goodies included a quiz, bookmarks, informative booklets on how the UK Parliament works, and how to get involved, as well as some comics shedding light on the inner workings of the Scottish Parliament.

The essence of Mr Brown’s initiative was to create awareness and foster interest among the young, touching upon the significance of both primary and secondary education, along with the communal aspects represented by the Brownie group.

Commenting, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“I loved being out and about in the constituency and was delighted to engage with so many different groups of young people. It was important to visit both primary and academy pupils, as well as stop by the local Brownies.

“The whole experience was great fun, and it was fantastic to see the knowledge and genuine interest from these three different groups of young people.

“Although it is UK Parliament Week, I always feel it is important to highlight the work of the Scottish Parliament and the devolved administration as this is where so many of our important decisions and policy is made. That is why we did our best to also focus on the influence of Holyrood as well as Westminster.

“It is vital that our young people have an interest in politics as they are our next generation of politicians, legislators and policymakers.

“As always, the most enjoyable part of these types of visits are the Q+As. The level of questioning was impressive, and I even got asked what my net worth was by one of the pupils at Auchinleck Primary. Another asked if I felt betrayed by Boris Johnson’s behaviour as he had felt betrayed – very insightful!

“I’d like to say a huge thanks to Mrs Montgomery of Auchinleck Primary, Shona McLaughlin of Loudoun Academy, Leah Finnigan of the 17th Brownie & 6th Guides, as well as all the young people for their time and for making me feel so welcome.”

Even though UK Parliament Week 2023 has come to a close, the engagement doesn't have to end there. If you represent a school and would like the MP to visit and actively engage with your pupils, Mr Brown invites you to connect with his office to coordinate a visit and gather further details. Contact him at: alan.brown.mp@parliament.uk or call us at 01563 501412. The office is located at 31A Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 1QW.

Last week, Alan Brown MP undertook a series of work experience placements in his constituency.

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun visited different local businesses and organisations in Kilmarnock to see how they operate.

Mr Brown kicked off by serving hot cups of coffee in Café City, before being put through a rigorous personal training session from Conor Dorrans PT at Kamma Gym. The MP then went for a walk about the town with a local police officer before being given a facial treatment from MW Skin.

Mr Brown is also set to visit more businesses in the coming weeks, off the back of undertaking his first Work Experience Week since before covid.

Commenting, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

“I always really enjoy going out to visit businesses and organisations in the constituency. It’s the first time I’ve been able to undertake my ‘Work Experience’ since covid as it is something I liked to try and do most years prior to the pandemic.

“It was important to visit a range of different businesses and industries, I feel I achieved this by visiting the hospitality, self-care and fitness sectors as well as the public service.

“From Mel giving me my first-ever facial at MW Skin to the intense workout with Conor Dorrans at Kamma Gym, I've gained invaluable insights into the challenges and triumphs of small businesses and public service providers. Both Mel and Connor are also effectively lifestyle coaches improving the wellbeing of their clients and that underlines the importance of these businesses.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who generously shared their time and expertise. As I eagerly look forward to visiting Utopia and Annandale Home Improvements in the coming weeks, I am excited to continue exploring and advocating for the thriving enterprises that shape Kilmarnock and Loudoun.

Press Release: An Evening With Stephen Flynn - 15/9/23

Last week (Thursday 14th September 2023) Alan Brown MP welcomed Stephen Flynn to his constituency as he addressed voters in Kilmarnock’s Grand Hall.

The SNP’s Westminster Leader took part in a Q+A event with members from all branches across Ayrshire, organised by local volunteers and activists.

Present were several Ayrshire elected representatives including; Allan Dorans (MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock), Willie Coffey MSP and Provost Jim Todd.

The event began with opening remarks from both Alan Brown MP and Stephen Flynn before Mr Brown, as Chair, welcomed questions from the floor for the Westminster Leader.

Commenting, Alan Brown MP said:

“It was great to have Stephen at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock to relay our positive message of delivering for Scotland.

“It says everything about him that he made time for the event before having to head back up to Aberdeen via train on the night.

“As someone who works with him daily and get to observe him in the Chamber, he is a fantastic communicator and very transparent. I am glad locals got the chance to see him speak and answer questions fantastically well.

“Since being elected as Westminster Group Leader 10 months ago he has had some very challenging situations to deal with, but he has always remained calm and grounded and I believe this was evident in his delivery of questions posed to him by the floor.

“With his work in Westminster and Humza’s leadership in Holyrood, the SNP are the only party offering a credible opposition to the Tories. We are the only party calling for the £400 energy bill rebate to be reintroduced, we are the only ones calling for mortgage support, we are the only ones opposing Brexit and we are the only ones standing up to the cruel austerity policies implemented by the Tories, such as the two-child limit and the benefit cap.”

Press Release: Bonnyton Flyers Visit - 27/8/23

Last week (Thursday 24th August 2023), Alan Brown MP visited Bonnyton Flyers in Kilmarnock.

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun dropped in to have a kickabout with the Flyers at the Galleon Centre.

Formed in 2014 by John Keast, Bonnyton Thistle Flyers is a disability football club for adults of all ability levels and is affiliated with Bonnyton Thistle FC.

Once a week they meet for a kickabout and a chat with their teammates.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Brown said:

"Joining the Flyers is always such a heartwarming experience. Witnessing the passion and camaraderie among the players is a testament to the unifying power of sports.

"As the representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun, engaging with local initiatives like the Bonnyton Thistle Flyers is a privilege. The dedication that John Keast has shown in establishing and nurturing this disability football club is truly inspiring. It's not just about the game itself; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and boosting their self-confidence.

“The work being carried out by John is truly remarkable and I was so happy to see him get the recognition he deserves at the recent Killie Community Champions Awards, after being presented with the Volunteer Award by Pat Nevin.

"Football has a remarkable way of breaking down barriers and creating connections. The Bonnyton Flyers personify this spirit by providing a platform where abilities shine, and friendships are formed. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share a session with them and witness first-hand the joy they derive from the beautiful game.”

John Keast, also commented:

“Encourage, support, and learn...the Flyers way.

“No, we are not all goalies...but we are all No.1.”

Press Release: Mauchline Street Surgery - 24/8/23

Last week (Wednesday 23rd August), Alan Brown MP chapped around 200 doors in Mauchline as part of his Street Surgery engagement.

This initiative is an integral part of Mr Brown’s approach to community engagement, allowing him to connect with constituents on a personal level and discuss the issues that matter most to them.

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun was joined by local Ballochmyle Ward Councillors Claire Leitch and William Lennox, as well as his staff.

The group took to the doorsteps of Connell Crescent, Rawson Crescent, Whiteford Place, and Arran View to speak to constituents about both local and national issues.

This marked the MP’s fourth Ballochmyle area Street Surgery this year, following earlier stints in Lugar, Cronberry and Sorn.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

“Engaging with constituents on their doorsteps provides invaluable insights into their concerns and aspirations - it's about bridging the gap between policymaking and the real needs of our community.

"I was pleased to have Willie and Depute Provost Leitch join us for the Surgery. Their understanding of the local area and its unique challenges is instrumental in addressing the matters raised by our constituents.

“The residents appreciated the fact we were out and about, which is a common theme for our Street Surgeries. Taking the time to engage at their doorstep is an essential aspect of my role as their representative, no matter their political allegiance. This is about improving the constituency, and this is demonstrated through the number of cases my office has picked up this year as a result of our Street Surgeries.

“I look forward to continuing this initiative, especially in the Ballochmyle area of the constituency. I have a Street Surgery in Muirkirk planned later this year, as well as other pop-up surgeries and visits.”

For more information and details of future availability, constituents should contact Mr Brown on 01563 501412 / alan.brown.mp@parliament.uk or drop into his office at 31A Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 1QW.

Press Release: Bedroom Tax - 7/8/23

1723 HOUSEHOLDS IN KILMARNOCK & LOUDOUN HIT BY BEDROOM TAX

Alan Brown MP has warned “the Tories and Labour are pushing families into poverty and costing Scotland millions of pounds" - as new analysis reveals how badly Kilmarnock and Loudoun has been impacted by the bedroom tax.

The analysis, conducted by the SNP using the latest data available from the UK government Department for Work and Pensions, revealed that 1142 households in East Ayrshire have had their housing benefits cut due to the policy as of February 2023.

1723 households in receipt of Universal Credit in Kilmarnock and Loudoun have also had their housing benefits cut due to the cruel bedroom tax.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

"The Tories and Labour are pushing people across Scotland into poverty, and costing the Scottish Government hundreds of millions of pounds by choosing to continue imposing the bedroom tax against Scotland's will.

"This is yet another broken promise from the pro-Brexit Labour Party, who are becoming indistinguishable from the Tories.

“In contrast, the SNP Scottish Government has spent millions of pounds protecting families by mitigating policies like the bedroom tax – all with one hand tied behind our back.

“With the full powers of independence, Scotland could rid itself of Westminster control for good – which would make policies like the bedroom tax a thing of the past.”

Press Release: Two-child limit - 21/7/23

ALAN BROWN MP DEMANDS U-TURN FROM STARMER

Mr Brown, has written a letter to Sir Keir Starmer, demanding an immediate U-turn on the cruel two-child benefit cap.

It follows new analysis, conducted by the SNP, showing 1,190 households in East Ayrshire are affected.

By percentage of households hit across Scotland, East Ayrshire comes off worse, with three in five households (59%) in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credits not receiving financial support for at least one child in April 2023.

The analysis also revealed that 20,000 children across Scotland have been pushed into poverty this year as a result of the two-child cap. It comes amid a growing backlash against the Labour party's admission that it would keep the two-child cap and may keep other damaging Tory cuts.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun has said Sir Keir Starmer “will have abandoned thousands of families in Scotland to poverty” if he fails to scrap the two-child cap – and that “voting SNP is the only way to secure independence and get rid of damaging Westminster governments for good”.

In the letter, Mr Brown said:

"As the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun, I write to express my concern at your party's decision to U-turn on the abolition of the two-child benefit cap.

"That decision has rightly been condemned by charities and politicians alike, including many of your own colleagues both at Westminster and at Holyrood.

"The evidence is clear: the two-child benefit cap drags children into poverty, but also predominately impacts working families too – families who are already struggling to get by in the UK’s low-wage Brexit-based economy.

“So much so, East Ayrshire Council has the highest percentage of universal credit claimants affected by this policy in Scotland. 59% of households who are in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credits are impacted by this “cruel and inhumane” policy – a phrase used by your own Deputy Leader. I am angry that a policy that has such a devasting impact on innocent children in my constituency is now apparently supported by the Labour Party.

"This is a shameful legacy that the Tories have created and one that your party are set to continue.

"A failure to U-turn will mean the Labour party have abandoned thousands of families in Scotland to poverty - leaving voters in no doubt that voting SNP is the only way to secure independence and get rid of damaging Westminster governments for good.

"I urge you to reconsider your party's position on this callous policy. I note too that many Labour MPs are arguing that they want the policy overturned but cannot afford to do so just yet. This is at odds with your unequivocal stance when you stated clearly “We are not changing that policy”.

“As for the argument about not having unfunded pledges, I draw your attention to your support for nuclear weapons of mass destruction (£200bn+); Labour’s continued support and push for new large-scale nuclear at Sizewell C (estimated cost £35-£40bn) and Labour’s support for Small Scale Nuclear Reactors (Tory unfunded pledge of £20bn). I believe I have helped you find significant savings that could cover the £1.3bn estimate to scrap the two-child tax policy.

“I look forward to hearing from you.”

Press Release: Energy Costs event - 24/4/23

Alan Brown MP Tackles Energy Cost Concerns Parliamentary Event

The representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun is taking a stand against the rising energy costs and unfair treatment many constituents face from their energy suppliers.

Last week (Tuesday 18th April), Mr Brown attended a cross-party event co-hosted by Drew Hendry MP and Anne McLaughlin MP.

At the event, Alan Brown MP supported two energy fairness campaigns to address energy-related challenges faced by people living in Kilmarnock and Loudoun.

Energy suppliers have a history of withholding credit balances, unnecessarily raising direct debit levels, and engaging in discriminatory practices against those on pre-payment meters. These practices tend to impact the most vulnerable members of society. By supporting Drew Hendry MP's "It's Your Money" Campaign and Anne McLaughlin MP's Pre-payment Meter Campaign, Mr Brown is working to make a difference for people living across the constituency.

During the parliamentary event, he participated in discussions about the campaigns and explored ways to collaborate with other MPs to help those most impacted by these unfair practices.

Mr Brown hopes that by attending the event, they can work with others to create a fairer and more transparent energy supply sector while raising awareness about the issues.

Commenting, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

"Taking part in this energy fairness event last week was a great opportunity to join forces with cross-party MPs to discuss ways to tackle energy-related challenges people living across Kilmarnock and Loudoun are facing.

"Whether it is energy suppliers holding on to customers' money or unfairly penalising people with pre-paid meters, it's clear that there are working practices in this sector that do not serve the best interests of consumers.

"To make matters worse, it is the most vulnerable in our community who are most affected by these practices. Without intervention, energy suppliers will continue to withhold consumers' money and punish those on pre-paid meters, leaving those affected dealing with unnecessary financial burdens.

By supporting these energy fairness campaigns, Mr Brown hopes to create a more transparent and fair energy supply sector, ultimately providing affected constituents with the financial relief they deserve.

The MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun encourages constituents to stay informed about the progress of these campaigns to ensure everyone gets a fair deal from energy suppliers.

Tower Hill Memorial - 22/3/23

On Wednesday 22nd March, the representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun visited Tower Hill Memorial in London to pay tribute to the fallen from his constituency.

The Memorial commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave.

Mr Brown was invited to visit Tower Hill by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Of the many names listed, 13 are associated with the Kilmarnock and Loudoun constituency.

One of the fallen was Benny Thomson, a winger who played for Kilmarnock Football Club during the 1930s and scored in the 1938 Scottish Cup Final against East Fife.

He served as a fireman and trimmer in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Thomson was posted aboard the steamer SS Balmore and was killed in action when the ship was sunk by German aircraft in the North Atlantic Ocean in November 1940, at the age of just 27.

The 13 servicemen commemorated were connected with the town of Kilmarnock as well as the Irvine Valley and Ballochmyle areas of the constituency.

Commenting, Alan Brown MP said:

“I was proud to attend Tower Hill and I thank the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for reaching out and highlighting the connection with my constituency.

“As MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun, it is important to me to honour the war dead from our constituency and to pay tribute to their sacrifice.

“The Tower Hill Memorial is particularly significant to our community as it commemorates 13 individuals who were connected to our community, either by birth, schooling, or residence.

“One of the casualties remembered is Benny Thomson, a Kilmarnock F.C. player who served as a fireman and trimmer during the Second World War. The fact that just two years before his death he was playing - and scored - in the Scottish Cup Final is almost unthinkable in modern times - it sends shivers up your spine. His loss is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made by so many young men during that conflict.

“It was humbling to see the names of these brave men and women who gave their lives in service to defend the country during these torrid times. I am proud to say that I lay a wreath every year at Remembrance Services across our constituency to ensure that their memory is never forgotten.

“It is also worth noting that my Great Uncle, Hugh Wilson, is amongst the names of the fallen at the Newmilns Memorial. The sacrifices made by the people of Kilmarnock and Loudoun during both World Wars cannot be overstated, and it is a privilege to represent a community with such a strong connection to the country’s military history.”

Specsavers (World Hearing Day) - 17/3/23

Alan Brown MP visits Specsavers in Kilmarnock for World Hearing Day

Last week, as part of World Hearing Day, Alan Brown MP visited Specsavers in Kilmarnock to learn about their services and support for the community.

The Kilmarnock store has 29 employees, both full-time and part-time, and offers support for staff members to go back to university to progress within the company.

As well as discussing the services on offer at Specsavers, Mr Brown was given a free eye and hearing test at the local store – something which can be taken up by all constituents.

Mr Brown has personal hearing issues, which runs in his family, and emphasised the importance of regular check-ups and using hearing aids. While hearing tests are free at Specsavers, the hearing aids themselves do come at a cost.

The Kilmarnock store also sponsors the local tennis club as well as the Roon the Toon 10k that takes place every year.

Commenting on the visit, the representative for Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

"It was great to visit Specsavers as part of World Hearing Day on Friday. I would like to extend my thanks to Martin and Alex for their time and for showing me around.

“I enjoyed talking to Martin about several initiatives run by the store as well as their sponsorship of local clubs and events, such as Kilmarnock Tennis Club and Roon the Toon. I was particularly impressed to learn of their support for younger members of staff, like Alex, who they are supporting in going back to full-time education to study and progress in his role within the company.

“As someone who has personal hearing issues, I know the importance of regular check-ups and using hearing aids. I was pleased to hear that hearing tests are free at Specsavers - they also offer a 2-for-1 deal on hearing aids.

“I would also encourage constituents to take advantage of the free eye tests available in Scotland and to support all local opticians as there are many great businesses in the area."

Also commenting, was Specsavers’ Martin O’Neill. He added:

“It was fantastic to be able to spend time with Alan Brown MP and highlight the hearing and optical services that our business provides. This helps to support the local community and takes pressure away from GP Practices and hospitals.”

UK Budget Must Reverse Tory Cost of Living Crisis - 14/3/23

ALAN BROWN MP: SLASH ENERGY BILLS AND PUT MONEY BACK IN PEOPLE'S POCKETS

The SNP has said "the number one priority for the UK budget must be to put money back into people's pockets" - warning the Tories can't continue to hammer household incomes.

Ahead of tomorrow’s budget, Alan Brown MP  has urged Jeremy Hunt to deliver a comprehensive package to boost household incomes and economic growth for Kilmarnock and Loudoun. Mr Brown says "families are sick to the back teeth of being ripped off by the Tory government " - and challenged the Chancellor to deliver the SNP's five point plan:

1. Saving families £1400 on energy bills - by cutting the Energy Price Guarantee to £2000 and maintaining the £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme to the summer.

2. Raising public sector pay and benefits by CPI - putting money into the pockets of millions of workers and delivering Barnett consequentials for Scottish spending.

3. Scrapping Tory plans to raise the pension age to 68, and reinstating the Triple Lock - so no one has to struggle in old age.

4. Rejoining the European Single Market - to boost economic growth and halt the multi-billion pound long-term damage being caused by Brexit.

5. Investing in green growth - by competing with EU and US subsidies to attract green investment.

In addition to the headroom identified by the IFS, and the billions of pounds saved as a result of the falling wholesale price of gas, [INSERT MP NAME] is calling for the Chancellor to scrap non-dom tax status, tax share buy backs, and expand the windfall tax, which would raise billions more to fund cost of living support for ordinary households.

Commenting, Alan Brown MP got Kilmarnock and Loudoun said:

"The number one priority for the UK budget must be to put money back into people's pockets - and reverse this Tory-made cost of living crisis.

"Scotland is a wealthy, energy-rich country but families are being fleeced by Westminster. By refusing to act, the Tories are showing why Scotland needs independence, so we can escape Westminster control, rejoin the EU, and build a fair and prosperous economy.

"Families are sick to the back teeth of being ripped off by the Tory government. Instead of hammering household incomes, the Chancellor must save families £1,400 by slashing energy bills and deliver a comprehensive package of support.

"The SNP's five-point plan would reduce bills, raise incomes and boost economic growth, at a time when many families are struggling to get by. With energy companies making record profits and the wholesale price of gas falling, there is no excuse for failing to act.

"The SNP Scottish Government is doing everything it can with limited fiscal powers, including delivering the Scottish Child Payment, higher energy bill support, and higher public sector pay.

"The UK government must finally step up to the plate and use its reserved powers to introduce a Real Living Wage and raise public sector pay and benefits by CPI. In doing so, it would raise the incomes of millions of workers and deliver Barnett consequentials which would benefit my constituency and the rest of Scotland.

"This UK Budget is all about choices. Instead of making ordinary families Kilmarnock and Loudoun pay for Westminster failure, the Tories must fund support by scrapping non-dom tax status, expanding the windfall tax and taxing share buy backs, which would raise billions.

"And if we are serious about delivering economic growth and reversing decline, the UK government must rejoin the European single market and properly invest in green energy.

"Scotland is suffering the consequences of Westminster control. The Tories trashed the economy with Brexit, austerity cuts and thirteen years of mismanagement. And with the pro-Brexit Labour Party becoming a pound-shop Tory tribute act, it’s clear independence is the only way for Scotland to secure the real change we need."

Andrew Bowie Failing to Stand Up for North East - 12/3/23

UK GOVERNMENT CRITICISED OVER 'EXPENSIVE AND UNNECESSARY' NUCLEAR STATIONS

SNP Energy spokesperson, Alan Brown MP, has accused Tory MP, Andrew Bowie, of failing to stand up for communities across the North East while prioritising ‘expensive and unnecessary’ nuclear stations over carbon capture storage (CCS) and renewable energy.

In a letter to Bowie, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, Mr Brown expressed concerns over updated costs to nuclear station Hinckley Point C - now slated to cost the taxpayers £33 billion, a 40% real terms increase to the original 2016 estimate of £18 billion.

Despite the soaring costs it was revealed earlier this week the UK government has not engaged with EDF over what that means for the delivery of the project, while still pressing ahead for another new station at Sizewell C.

Mr Brown called on the UK government to support Scottish Government efforts to secure a just transition, demanded a Tory U-turn on their snub to the CCS Acorn Project in the North East, and for the Tories to scrap plans to throw another £33bn at Sizewell C.

Commenting, Alan Brown MP said:

“Rather than supporting efforts to herald in a just transition for the tens of thousands reliant on the energy sector in his own patch, Andrew Bowie and his Tory UK government is instead prioritising expensive and unnecessary nuclear stations that won’t even open until at least 2028.

“With his warped priorities he’s failing to stand up for the communities in the North East who won’t benefit from nuclear energy, and have directly suffered from the UK government’s carbon capture snub.

“Scotland is an energy rich nation, and that means it is essential that the UK government match the Scottish Government’s commitment to harness that energy in a clean and renewable way while securing jobs – nothing Bowie is doing supports that.

“The North East CCS Acorn Project will cost a fraction of the £33 billion the Tories now want to commit for Sizewell C – they must reverse their snub of the plant and put money on the table to support North East energy jobs.

“But it’s not just CCS – green hydrogen production, pumped storage hydro, energy efficiency measures and battery storage are just some of the things taxpayers cash would be better focussed on.

“Time and time again the North East has been let down by the Tory UK government, proving beyond a doubt that only with the full powers of independence can we direct the right investment, and put an end to the warped priorities of the Tories.”

Budget Support - 9/3/23

HOUSEHOLDS IN KILMARNOCK AND LOUDOUN SUFFERING FROM TORY-MADE COST OF LIVING CRISIS

The Chancellor must use next week’s budget to tackle the Tory-made cost of living crisis harming households across Kilmarnock and Loudoun local MP, Alan Brown has said.

Polling carried out by Survation in partnership with campaign group 38Degrees revealed the stark impact of rising costs imposed on households in recent months, with findings showing in Kilmarnock and Loudoun:

• 20% of people have missed rent payments in the last six months

• 49% haven't been able to afford to turn the heating on

• 30% fear they may have to use a foodbank

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

“All eyes are on next week’s budget to see what support is on offer to assist households through a cost of living crisis of the Tories’ making.

“People and families in my constituency are suffering from a toxic mix of inflation, soaring energy costs, rising mortgage rates, and Tory austerity and cannot afford continued inaction from the UK government.

“If the Chancellor wants to provide he can start by cutting the Energy Price Guarantee to £2000 and maintaining the £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme to the summer, a move that would save households £1,400.

“The fact 20% of my constituents are missing rent payments, almost half are living without heating through the cold months, and 30% are relying on foodbanks is a disgrace that should shame the Tories into taking serious action - but I won't hold my breath.

“These figures have soared, like costs, under Westminster Tory rule and we’re unlikely to see what families desperately need from a party that throughout its existence has lacked the political will to help the most vulnerable.

"In Scotland we've used our limited powers to support households, including with the introduction of the Scottish Child payment, described as 'game-changing' by leading charities. But it shouldn't be for the SNP Scottish Government to constantly have to mitigate the worst of Tory rule.

“The impact of the Tory-made cost of living crisis has set out further proof that only with the full powers of independence can we offer real support through difficult times and secure just economic prosperity that works for everyone in our society.”

Energy Price Cap - 27/2/23

SNP REITERATE CALL FOR CHANCELLOR TO REVERSE INCREASE TO GOVERNMENT CAP

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is being urged to reverse a planned increase to the government energy price guarantee and pass on a 20% reduction in wholesale energy prices after Ofgem published its reduced price cap.

The energy regulator announced that the new cap from April will be £3,280, down from £4,279. However, bills are still set to increase as the UK government-imposed cap is set to rise from £2,500 to £3,000 a year.

That is also despite wholesale gas prices dropping by 75% since their peak in the summer. The SNP is calling on the Chancellor to pass on this price drop to consumers by reducing its energy price guarantee cap by 20% to £2,000.

Commenting, SNP Energy spokesperson Alan Brown MP said:

“People across Scotland will be scratching their heads as their energy bills are set to go up, despite the price cap coming down. Jeremy Hunt must pass on the reduction in wholesale gas prices to consumers and bring down the government’s cap on bills to £2,000 per year.

“The UK government will actually be spending less on the energy price guarantee because of the reduction in the Ofgem cap, so households should be seeing the impact of that on their energy bills. Instead, the Chancellor is planning on keeping the surplus whilst energy bills skyrocket again.

“In a country as energy rich as Scotland, people should not be paying through the nose for their gas and electricity bills. It is only because of decades of Westminster mismanagement of Scotland’s resources that this has happened.

“Only with independence can we truly harness the potential of Scotland’s renewable energy industry and for the people of Scotland to benefit from our resources.”
